Interior design services: what each one actually delivers

What counts as interior design services?

The term covers three kinds of work that get sold under one name. The first is planning. Where walls sit, how rooms connect, where the light lands, what everything is made of. The second is the drawings and schedules that trades quote and build from. The third is the furniture and the install at the end.

A studio that only does the third one is a decorating business. A studio that does the first two is doing interior architecture, whether or not it uses the word. Ask any firm you are weighing up which of the three it carries out in house. The answer changes the price. It also changes what lands in your inbox at the end.

Design, decoration or styling: which do you need?

Design changes the plan. Walls move. A laundry becomes a butler's pantry. The island shifts 300mm so the fridge door clears. Decoration works inside a plan that already functions, and picks the furniture, fabric, art and lighting. Styling is the lightest of the three. It arranges what is already in the room, which is why stylists sell it before an auction.

Most regret comes from buying one and needing another. A room that feels wrong because the doorway lands badly will still feel wrong with new rugs in it.

The services, one by one

Every job is built from the same set of parts, in whatever mix the house calls for.

Where online and virtual packages stop

Two of those are worth buying on their own. Drafting is one. Plenty of people know exactly what they want and need it drawn well, so the cabinet maker and the estimator work from one set. Renders are the other. Stand in a kitchen at full size, months before anything is ordered, and you notice the pantry door swings the wrong way.

The cheapest results on this search are e-design packages. You send photos and sizes. You get a concept board and a shopping list. For a lounge room refresh that is honest value, and we would not pretend otherwise.

The limit shows up as soon as building work starts. Online interior design services rarely include measured drawings, joinery elevations, wiring layouts or a spec a builder can tender from. If a trade has to hold a page and price off it, someone has to draw it to that standard.

What do design fees actually pay for?

Studios charge in one of three ways: an hourly rate, a fixed fee per stage, or a share of the build cost. We quote per stage once the scope is clear. That way nobody buys a whole home job to get a kitchen and a laundry done well.

The number tracks the depth of the drawing set far more than the size of the house. A concept and a furniture list is one figure. A fully drawn renovation that goes to three builders for pricing is another, because the hours sit in the documents. Ask what you receive at the end, in file names, before you compare two quotes.

Is it worth paying for an interior designer?

Measure it against the cost of changing your mind late. Australians approved $1.36 billion of home alterations and additions in June 2026 alone, on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Building Approvals release. Plenty of that work gets redone because layouts were settled on site instead of on paper.

For a repaint and new cushions, no. When someone is about to price a renovation from your plans, the drawings decide the number. Moving a wall after the slab is poured costs more than the fortnight of design that would have caught it.
